Gozo’s Top Dive Sites: Billinghurst Cave
Billinghurst Cave is a truly spectacular dive. Arguably Gozo's most 'proper' cave dive, Billinghurst sits between Reqqa Point and Cathedral Cave on the scenic north coast.
The entry point is a short ladder nestled along the impressive cliffs of the north coast. Upon entry, you float above approximately 30 meters of crystal-clear azure water, directly above the entrance of Billinghurst Cave. You'll experience a thrilling freefall as you descend to the bottom, ready to swim through the massive entrance.
The scale of this cave is truly breathtaking. Also known as "The Railway Tunnel," the cave features a vast, spacious natural tunnel that extends deep into its interior. The bottom remains relatively flat in the first section, consisting of coarse sand, allowing you to explore the walls adorned with colorful sponges and false corals. Numerous cracks and crevices provide shelter for a variety of marine life, including crustaceans and Conger eels.
Further inside, you'll encounter large boulders leading to the shallower back section of the cave. Here, you may find fixed cave lines to follow, guiding you through the entire cave to an air pocket at its farthest point before looping back toward the entrance.
The water is often incredibly clear, allowing you to fully appreciate the cave’s stunning rock formations and the spectacular view of the distant entrance, even from its deepest recesses.

As you exit, you'll be greeted by the breathtaking silhouette of the arching entrance set against a deep blue backdrop—an unforgettable sight.
If you still have ample air and wish to extend your dive time, you can explore the coastal walls outside the cave. This area is home to a variety of reef fish and marine life, including octopuses tucked away along the rocky surfaces.
