Why dive Gozo?
Gozo is one of the most popular diving destinations in the Mediterranean, and recognised as having world class dive sites to offer. What exactly is it that makes our little rock such a good place for underwater exploration?
One of the main things that keep diving enthusiasts coming back to Calypso’s Isle is the incredible topography and stunning underwater scenery.
Gozo’s rugged coastline boasts a wide variety of topographical wonders. The west coast is home to Dwejra. Here we have some of the most iconic dives in the Mediterranean; the Inland Sea and The Blue Hole, with the impressive Coral Cave just a short distance away.
The North coast’s steep drop off and more exposed coastline has created some amazing caves and caverns, while the south has a number of beautiful inlets and is home to an underwater pinnacle bustling with life.
This diversity in underwater scenery means that there is something to suit all divers. Such impressive topography also means that no matter what, even if we were to remove marine life from the equation, these dives are always beautiful. You just can’t lose!
Another huge plus point of diving in Gozo is the great visibility. The gin-clear water of the Mediterranean Sea which surrounds our beautiful island makes for an amazing backdrop for the dive sites.
With visibility often reaching 40m you can truly appreciate the topography and marine life. The azure waters reflect light beautifully, perfectly complimenting the caves, caverns, arches, swimthroughs and tunnels that cover the coast.
Having such good vis is also beneficial for those learning to dive. Having such clear vision makes going through those first few dives so much more comfortable and relaxed. Plus, if you are used to murky water at home then clear visibility is always more than welcome.
Even though it is the natural underwater ‘architecture’ that makes the island famous, there is still plenty of marine life to encounter.
Throughout the year there are a wide variety of underwater flora and fauna to see. Divers can expect to see smaller reef fish, such as Wrasses, Breams, Damselfish, Cardinalfish, Red Mullet and much more. Depending on the time of year, different predatory fish roam the islands waters. Barracuda, Amberjack, Blue Runner Jack and Grouper sightings are not uncommon and make for exciting diving.
Then there are the more weird and wonderful animals, Octopus, Cuttlefish, Moray Eel, Conger Eel and even Seahorses can be found at the many dive sites Gozo has to offer.
Not only is the diving here fantastic, but also accessible. The fact that the majority of diving here is done from the shore makes things very relaxed. Yes, a couple of dives require a little walking, but this means that the schedule can be a relaxed one. With no need to adhere to the boat captain’s timing we are able to move slow, take our time, and enjoy some of the beautiful views that the Gozitan coastline offers.
This is ideal for beginners too. Having easy access into sheltered shallow areas means that taking those first steps into the world of diving is much less intimidating. We can also conduct skills sessions and confined water dives in the sea, making for a much more realistic and interesting experience.
Those looking to dive independently will also enjoy an increased level of freedom. There are multiple vehicle rental options to suit transporting yourself and your equipment, and the island is small, so you can tailor the schedule to your own wants and needs very easily!
Why dive Gozo? Why not. There is so much to offer on this beautiful island that it keeps divers coming back for more. Don’t miss out and get in touch for a tailored dive package.
